@Tyler Howell I don’t need your life story. The way you’re trying to advise a Black woman to react to her son in public, when no crime or violence was committed, indicates your privilege. If you told me that you’d pay $500 for a Big Mac, I’d say you were privileged or stupid. No sense in telling me your life story. You’d still be either privileged or stupid for your comment. Since others have told you that you sound privileged then I think it’s time to get over yourself and take the advice and improve. You’re not above that, sir.

Good for him man. I don't know him, but talent aside, I can see why he was so highly recruited... it shows great courage and integrity to go with your heart, especially when there's so much pressure from those closest to you to do otherwise. He chose what was right and not what was easiest. Being born and raised in Bloomington, IN, I've seen so many friends go to IU because of family and peer pressure, when it wasn't the best for for themselves. A few of my friends, with similar pressure, left the comfort of home to go to Purdue because it was the best choice for engineering, and even two who went all the way to UC Santa Cruz for computer science. Today, they're 3 of the happiest people I know because of that decision.

For all you people criticizing the mother for walking out, it was to prevent her son from getting involved in gang-related activity. She is looking out for her son’s well-being. Certainly not. Whatever disagreement she had she should have dealt with in private. You don't take away your son's moment like that and that's a moment he will never get back. No matter how she feels about it all, it's still HIS decision. The mother can only hope that his decision won't affect him negatively.

none of your damn business it’s not the woman’s fault that the dad was potentially wrong or left his kids, tf? Men should be capable to check themselves, and if not, then that’s their problem. And even if the dad did leave (which is wrong by itself to assume from someone you don’t even know, and shows your racial prejudices), you’re acting like that don’t happen in other races. You say that if you didn’t “pick” the right father, then you don’t care for your kids lmao. Firstly, that mentality is stupid, because the outcome of your unpredictable relationship with someone does not determine your love towards your kids. Secondly, people from other races do that, too, so I’m still confused why you brought this up when talking about black moms. Keep in mind that this is a male saying this.

Regardless of what he said, I think he knows 'exactly' why his mother walked out as apparently she and he must have talked at length about the decision beforehand. Nonetheless, he is a grown man who is entitled to make his own choices. That said, if it is true that he really does have a gang affiliation then in time he will be kicked off the team anyway. ...particularly if he has anything remotely to do with committing a crime? National sports teams have a low tolerance these days for bad press. In short, if he wants to mess up his once in a lifetime opportunity over his knucklehead gang member friends then let him. It will make room for someone else who will genuinely appreciate being there.
