Giannis should not only feel proud of his Nigerian heritage, but also of the fact that most greeks, and people all over the world, respect him for his character, attitude, and kindness, regardless of his box score. Give them a triple-single average this season; don’t care, as long as you can continue to inspire people the way you do. Μπράβο Γιάννη!

@Jaytalks Not the same. All Greeks are not fascists. The current extreme right Greek government are killing people in the sea borders on a daily basis and that has been reported by several International Media. Apparently the forces that are, like the EU an NATO , they do not care about a few hundred immigrants dying in the Aegean sea. They care only what happens in Ukraine! Greece will have elections soon and the fascist regime will fall!

He is explaining what many of us with two homelands understand. I'm Greek-Australian and it's the same for us. The song by Stelios Kazantzidis said it best. Στα ξένα είμαι Έλληνας και στην Ελλάδα ξένος (In the foreign lands I'm a Greek and in Greece I'm a foreigner).

The Greek freak is a 🔥 name, one of the greatest nicknames I have heard in my life Edit: I don't know how other people felt about the name but, I can assure that I thought of the Greek freak as a compliment to giannis same as LeBron, Currys, Luka, Trae, edwards

Certain nicknames just stick and people run with them, especially if the player has a good highlight and the announcers say it, as the clip gets shared and the call is heard over and over its instantly stuck. When players try and fight them too it usually doesn't help, especially if its an insulting one like Westbrick, once people know it bothers them they're just gonna hammer it to death. I never understood why KD didn't like Slim Reaper thats great, though now Devonta Smith for the eagles has taken it as his nickname, since he's an undersized WR but won the Heisman putting up insane numbers. Another good one is Shaq naming Dragic as Dragon, I also like Stifle tower

I've had a similar experience growing up. In the UK I've always been considered Greek, and in Greece I've always been seen as British. The fact is that I'm both and one doesn't take away from the other. I absolutely love fish and chips just as much as I like souvlaki. Giannis is a model Greek citizen and an amazing role model for Greeks both with and without migrant roots. The people that say he "isn't Greek enough" (I've met a few) have a warped view of national identity...go back far enough and we're all from somewhere. I'm pleased to see him talking more about his Nigerian background. He's Nigerian and this doesn't make him any less Greek.

To be the child of immigrants and show up authentically as you are-equal parts old, new, borrowed, self-created-is a lot. Giannis does it with so much grace, confidence, and humility. People assume they can tell you what world you belong to-but there’s a power in the space between worlds, if you embrace it. Kudos to you Giannis, the king who has crossed the seas👑

The refs are going to be on them like glue and fouls are going to be called and just say a lot is going to happen. Doc really lost the series for the Sixers and he needs to be fired because I feel like he's never going to change. He's the reason for all of this and I would like to see Sam Cassell coach. Doc didn't coach game 6 it was Burke, Doc had a nervous breakdown grabbing his head because he didn't know what to do.

What needs to be defined is what does it mean to be Greek, or be identified with any European country. This only applies to Europe, no other continent. Antetokounmpo is not Greek by blood. He is a Greek CITIZEN(status). There is a considerable difference. One would figure that would be the deciding factor. But this racial BS continues to used for division and to destroy European identity.

I think it is a controversial topic. Are we what we feel, are we what we are raised into or are we our genetics ? I personally think that genetics are in our modern days insignificant, more important is in which culture you are raised in and with what ethnic group (with all his history) you want to identify yourself. Giannis is Nigerian in dna, but in culture he is 50% Nigerian and 50% Greek. So it’s by himself to choose what he is and which ethnic group he wants to represent and who’s legacy he want to continue. He can follow the Nigerian part with all the Nigerian history and ancestors, or he can follow the greek part with the Hellenic history and ancestors. It’s by him who he sees as his grandfathers. It’s not only genetics, it’s more culture. The Greeks would be proud if Gianni’s choose the Greek path. But at the end of the day it’s his decision what he feels.

I suppose all of our ethnicities have a nuanced answer that have been oversimplified. Personally, I always thought that Giannis was more Nigerian than Greek though so he should shed that moniker if he feels like it's inappropriate.
