From Rummy's Corner video about the fight: “One thing I’ve learned after years of being a boxing fan, is that greatness sometimes manifests in different ways and varying capacities. Buster Douglas may not be remembered as an all time great heavyweight, but on that one fateful night in Tokyo, he truly was greatness personified.”

  26. Michael Wainscott

The stars aligned, Douglas had the reach, the jab and the fortitude unlike any fight he fought before. Mike Tyson brought the best out in Douglas, and Tyson was obviously not focused in his preparation. Still, a great fight by the huge underdog Buster who could have quit after being almost knocked out in Round 8, but he didn't fight scared. He sensed he could win and the longer the fight went on, his confidence grew after being saved by a long count and the bell. The rest is history. Greatest upset in boxing history.

The only reason the guy won was due to Tyson underestimating him not fighting in his usual style. Douglas (cleverly or accidentally) took advantage of that. You want to see true unbroken will, look no further than Iron Mike. It's nice to look at this story as one man vs a giant and the underdog, through willpower and belief, won the day. It just didn't happen like that. He was a bad boxer before this fight, during this fight, and after this fight. Tyson's matches, however, speak for themselves; unfortunately only before and after this match...during, he basically threw the fight out of impatience.

Buster didn't make that mistake that night. It was a great great fight. Nobody should feel that it was not. Both boxers really performed well. It's just somebody comes out on top in such a contest, as it is designed. Make no mistake, I'm a big fan of Mike Tyson. He is amazing. But that just wasn't his night. Buster Douglas really stepped up and you really should see that for what it was. Awesome event. Brutal but goes to show EVERYONE, DON'T GIVE UP!"

I was in my early 20s then. And I can tell you it was a worldwide shock. There's happened something NO one has expected. The bets 42:1. Crazy. All the news were only about that fight. The next time something similarly sensational was Lennox Lewis' defeat by KO against Hasim Rahman in 2001.

Buster's apotheosis. A beautifully fought contest. Tactical and strategic on Douglas's corner: Use your reach advantage. Keep Tyson off you by hitting him first with combinations before he can start his attack. Force him to defend, OR absorb punches. Keep wearing him down into the late rounds where he has rarely been. Keep chopping. He will fall. In that final exchange Buster hit Mike more than ten times -- four in the final flurry, hitting Mike with three even as he was falling. Buster was ruthless that day.

Given how fast Tyson always dispatched his opponents, the fact he wasn't able to do that to Douglas had to be living rent free in his head as the rounds added up. I must admit that it gave me great satisfaction to see Tyson, who was usually so brutal in his early round KO wins, get handled the way he did by Douglas.

To people complaining about the ref's reactions to the two knock downs; Douglas got planted from one very good punch. When he gets up, he still has his legs under him, stands up straight and is looking at his opponent. Meaning, clearly Douglas is aware of where he is and what's happening and wants to keep fighting. Tyson takes a heavy shot and then about three more where he clearly can no longer defend himself. He's out on his feet, he's just a tough S.O.B. so he doesn't fall. However, while the ref is counting, Tyson clearly has no idea where he is. He's got jelly legs, he's fumbling around for his mouth piece, his eyes are unfocused, he's not standing straight and attentive. He's out. If the ref had let him keep going, Douglas would have just caused more damage against a defenseless opponent. This was a really good job by the ref recognizing the differences. He made a judgement call with each and he was right on both counts. Great fight, great upset, great story.

Yes, it was an interesting match, because Tyson brought his usual form to send Douglas to the ground but relatively late in the 8th round, despite the fact that Tyson's face was already pretty smashed, but Douglas knocked out Tyson by KO in the 10th round and won the whole match, which was also not at all characteristic of Mike Tyson, who was in his prime at that time in his sporting career

@RAM Buster Douglas' mom died just 21 days before his fight with Tyson. When they fought, Mike Tyson was the undisputed, undefeated heavyweight champion of the world, while Buster Douglas already had four losses, THREE of them by TKO, and he was six years OLDER than Tyson. So if it was anyone who had to overcome huge odds, it was Buster Douglas, and he did overcome huge odds, LITERALLY. Vegas had him at 42-1 and they weren't even taking bets on the fight. Bottom line - NOBODY believed Buster Douglas had a chance to beat Mike Tyson except Buster Douglas, his family, and his team. Just give credit where credit is due, and leave it at that. Anything else is just speculation.
